RIGHT TO SECURED HOUSING URBAN POVERTYPROGRAM
By doing slum mapping Vigyan came to know 40% of the urban population in Lucknow is poor, living in
787 shabby slum settlements. They have faced different issues at different times. Labor markets had no provision for
basic facilities and even the government run night shelters for the migrants are very few and in miserable condition. The slum settlements are devoid of the basic facilities and the people have had minimal access to socio-political rights. Vigyan as the coordinator of UTTAR
PRADESH SHEHRI GAREEB AWAS EVAM ADHIKAR MANCH which was formed to raise a collective voice against housing rights violation reacted sharply and held meetings in the affected slums. The objectives of the program are to build sustainable CBOs around the issue of basic
facilities especially water & sanitation, Ensure women leadership in the CBOs, Facilitate access to basic services, Network & alliance building & Build an urban resource center. In this project, Vigyan formed basti, cluster and district level CBOs/morcha. Vigyan also organized regular capacity building of morcha leaders. Vigyan further mobilized the CBO members to access the
fundamental socio-political rights & Produce, collect and disseminate IEC material, reference material related to urban poverty-laws,
legislations, government schemes etc. Vigyan also facilitated access to secure housing rights of urban poor & Ensured access to basic rights like ration card, voting card etc to many slum dwellers, access to social security schemes like old
age pension, widow pension and handicap-pension and other basic facilities like water, sanitation
and drainage. Vigyan also made some policy level interventions.
